OWU Sportswear Boosts Nigerian Presence

No fewer than nine clubs in Nigeria’s top flight (Glo Premier League), second tier class (Nigeria National League), Women’s League (Nigeria Women Football League) and the amateur class (Nigeria Nationwide League) will step out in jerseys produced by Owu Sportswear when the 2013/14 season begins.

It’s no surprise as OWU has since become the fastest growing domestic sportswear brand less than four years after signing its first kit deal with the famous Shooting Stars Sports Club.

OWU’s story started with 3SC in 2010 and in 2012, the trio of MFM, ABS and Lobi Stars embraced the brand.

The OWU band now includes Supreme Court, Federal Road Safety (FRSC) as well as the Kogi State sponsored duo of Kogi United and Confluence Queens.

No sportswear brand has achieved this feat in the Nigerian league.

Another feat was achieved in 2012 when OWU was named Best Sportswear in the League Bloggers Award (LBA).

The brand was also nominated during the 2013 edition.

Target

“We’re proud of the feat. Our target is to have greater presence in the country.

“Since our partnership with 3SC kicked off, several clubs have shown interest in our designs.

“We’re always excited when clubs step out for matches in our designs”, OWU CEO, Tunji Brown told SuperSport.com.

With Confluence Queens as its first female team, OWU appears ready to make a bold move into the women’s market.

Despite the challenges in the industry, Brown remains committed to his dream.

“Our desire is to improve the designs since that’s the best way to boost the brand’s profile”, Brown said to SuperSport.com.

To boost its brand profile, OWU partnered Friends For Africa, an initiative in which several ex-international and entertainment stars were dressed by the brand for a charity match

Former Nigerian stars like Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Jonathan Akpoborie, Celestine Babayaro, Benedict Akwuegbu, Emmanuel Babayaro, Daniel Amokachi andseveral Nollywood practitioners featured during the exhibition match.

With 20 teams in the top flight and 32 in the second tier class, the market is indeed massive.

Add the Women and Amateur class, then you can imagine OWU has a lot more to cover.

SuperSport.com learnt that the Port-Harcourt based Premier League duo of Dolphins and Sharks are likely to embrace the brand as negotiations continue ahead of the new season.

Considering the brand’s dynamic approach, it won’t be long before OWU takes full control of the landscape.
